Handfasting - "Tying the knot" & "The Bonds of Matrimony".

Handfasting is the historical term for "betrothal" or "wedding". It is a type of commitment ceremony, the commitment may be seen as temporary and secular, or of a longer, spiritual variety, depending on the context preferred. It could be included in weddings, vow renewals and civil ceremonies. Handfasting is the symbolic act of a couple's hands being tied together, often with cords or ribbons, representing their union.

You can choose, what you are tied with and the colours. Many people like to be handfasted with an infinity knot, its roots are embedded in the concept that it is endless, eternal and thus unbreakable; so ideal for a commitment ceremony!

The cords

For Wiccan and Pagan paths each has different decrees concerning the colour, length, type and of the number of cords used to handfast the couple. One custom may have the couple facing each other, binding both pairs of hands of the bride and groom. Another custom is to have only the right hands, and another one of each right and left. There are many variations of the handfasting rite. It all depends on the bride, groom, you can make your own cords out of material personal to you, I can provide them or you can order them from the internet.

The colours

White for purity, blue for fidelity, and red for passion, green for fertility and growth, purple for spiritual strength, and gold for wisdom. The "right colours" are the colours that are right for you.
